本单元恰巧碰到adjust，其重要结构是adjust to doing sth，其中，to是介词。现将高中阶段类似的结构做一个大总结：
一、 (短语) 动词 + 介词to + 动词-ing：
1. admit to doing sth 承认做了某事：
I had to admit to being nervous about the test. 我不得不承认对这次考试感到紧张。
2. object to doing sth 反对做某事：
We object to leaving him alone. 我们不赞成留下他一个人。
3. see to doing sth 处理某事：
I must see to getting the dinner ready. 我必须负责把饭准备好。
4. stick to doing sth 坚持做某事：

5. get down to doing sth 开始做某事：
It’s time I got down to thinking about that essay. 我该认真思考一下那篇论文了。
6. look forward to doing sth 盼望 / 期待做某事：
I’m looking forward to visiting the art gallery next week. 我盼望着下周去参观美术馆。
7. pay attention to doing sth 注意做某事：
You must pay attention to your writings. 你要注意你的书写。
二、动词 + 宾语 + 介词to + 动词-ing：
1. adapt (oneself) to (doing) sth 使 (自己) 适应做某事：
I had difficulty adapting myself to living in the city. 我难以适应在城市居住。
2. adjust (oneself) to (doing) sth 使 (自己) 适应做某事：
It took him a while to adjust (himself) to working night shifts. 他过了一段时间才适应了上夜班。
3. apply oneself to doing sth 专注于做某事：
Over the next months, he applied himself to improving the technique. 接下来的几个月，他一门心思改进技术。
4. commit sth to (doing) sth 投入时间或精力 (做) 某事：
I commit an hour to reading the newspapers every morning. 我每天早上抽出一小时看报。
三、be + 形容词 + 介词to + 动词-ing：
1. (be) accustomed to (doing) sth 习惯于 (做) 某事：
We were accustomed to working together. 我们习惯在一起工作。
2. (be) addicted to (doing) sth 对 (做) 某事上瘾：
A textaholic can be defined as someone who is addicted to sending and receiving messages. 短信狂指的是对收发短信上瘾的人。
3. be devoted to doing sth 致力于做某事：
He is devoted to educating the younger generation. 他致力于培养年轻的一代。
4. be equal to doing sth 能胜任做某事：
I am equal to doing this job. 我能胜任做这项工作。
5. be limited to doing sth 把……限制在做某事的范围内：
Your are limited to moving around this area. 你只限于在这个区域内走动。
6. be used to doing sth 习惯于做某事：
Travellers are used to living in different climates and conditions. 旅行者习惯在不同的气候和条件下生活。
7. be opposed to doing sth 反对做某事：
I am opposed to taking such measures. 我反对采取这样的措施。
四、其他
when it comes to (doing) sth在某方面；说到 (做) 某事：
Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts. 在记忆事实方面两组得分差不多。

我们每个人都拥有自己的“舒适地带 (comfort zone) 或熟悉的领域”。在那里我们的生活是可预见的、常规的、没有压力的。我们将那些引起压力、使我们焦虑的事情拒之门外。虽然待在“舒适地带”里很舒服，但如果不去打破舒适区的枷锁，怎么能看到外面世界的精彩呢？
今天我们就讲一下comfort zone里的comfort这个词。
1. comfort在高考阅读、完形、书面表达中经常出现，由comfort构成的词块是学习的重点。
2. comfort 的抽象名词具体化是高考考查的重点，曾在单项填空中考查过。学生需要熟悉一些常见的抽象名词具体化的名词。如：surprise, pleasure, pity, success, danger, pleasure, beauty等。这类抽象名词在强调具体的人或事时，是一个可数名词。

recommend是课标重点词，“维克多高考语料库”的数据显示，该词频繁出现于高考的各种题型中，考查点主要包括：1. 拼写。它在高考的书面表达中出现的频率很高，务必要会正确拼写；2. 用法。高考中考查最多的点是：recommend意为“劝告；建议”后接宾语从句时，从句中的谓语动词要用“should + 动词原形”的形式，should可以省略。其次考查较多的点是recommend意为“推荐；介绍”时的搭配：recommend sb / sth to sb，主要用于书面表达中。3. 搭配。recommend经常与副词highly, strongly搭配，表示“强烈推荐 / 力劝”之意。

爱读英文小说的亲们，一定对图片上的话不陌生。这句话是英国著名女性小说家简·奥斯汀 (Jane Austen) 所著的长篇小说《傲慢与偏见》 (Pride and Prejudice) 的开篇第一句话，翻译成中文是：凡是有钱的单身汉，总想娶位太太，这已经成了一条举世公认的道理。
acknowledge在上面的句子中意为“承认”，是其常用义。acknowledge 词形与knowledge有关，acknowledge = a (处于) + c (无意义）+ knowledge (知道)→处于知道的状态→承认，与recognize相比，程度相对弱一些，侧重于“知道”某个事实。
有些英文书的正文前或正文后有一页Acknowledgements，可翻译成“致谢；感谢；鸣谢”。

★acknowledge第一层英语释义中的accept和admit是其近义词，可建立新旧知识之间的联系。
★acknowledge第二、三层释义是低义频释义，而且仅仅从中文释义来理解acknowledge，不太好理解，所以这两层释义均给出英语释义，以帮助理解。
★acknowledgement 是acknowledge加后缀-ment派生而来。其释义也与acknowledge相对应。
