表情包又双叒被收录英文字典!这些网络热词都认识吗?

说起网络新词，小伙伴们记得前几天英大刚刚教你的“拿小拳拳锤你胸口”吗？

 
这么生动有趣的网络新词，估计收录进新华字典是无望了！

不过，就在本周二，韦氏官方正式宣布收录了1000多个网络词汇！啧啧啧，韦氏词典追又赶了把时代潮流，企图站在年轻酷炫的风尖浪口。

但是尼玛单词书越来越厚了……
 

不过不知道是不是牛津词典开了一个不好的头——2015年，这本世界权威性的词典竟然把一个颜文字评为了“年度热词”：

face with tears of joy，是的，见到这个“年度热词”的瞬间，英大的表情也只能用以上emoji来诠释了……相当传神……

现在韦氏词典也被带跑偏了。2017年加入的这批热词里，于是我们看见了——

Face-palm 捂脸

Face-palm means someone cover his or her face with the hand as an expression of embarrassment, dismay, or exasperation.

捂脸，就是指人们因尴尬、沮丧、恼怒而用手捂住脸。

当然秉承着与时俱进这一原则，还有颇具时代气息的：

啥，网络中立，啥意思？?是说网络是吧双刃剑的意思？？当然不是！

Net neutrality (also network neutrality or Internet neutrality) is the principle that Internet service providers and governments should treat all data on the Internet equally, not discriminating or charging differentially by user, content, site, platform, application, type of attached equipment, and modes of communication.
噢，原来指得是互联网服务供应商应该本着不歧视原则，平等的对待因特网上的信息啊！~

这个词是指精明却又毫无原则的人，特指政客。

The phrase has been used by colleges post-election to describe themselves as campuses that will protect students who might feel in danger due to their religious beliefs, sexual orientation, race or gender.

大选后，大学生就用这个词来称自己为“保护那些因个人宗教信仰、性取向、种族或性别而感到危险的学生的校园。

当然还有一些非常“懂我们”，相当实用的：

Binge-watching, also called binge-viewing or marathon-viewing, is the practice of watching television for a long time span, usually of a single television show.

刷剧特指看很久的电视，通常是一部电视剧。

ghost 悄悄地行进

Ghost is used as verb and refers to someone who abruptly cuts off all contact with (somebody, such as a former romantic partner) by no longer accepting or responding to phones calls, instant messages, etc.

悄悄的行进是指突然切断了不和身边的人（像是之前的前恋人）的所有联系，不接，不回电话短信等。

不过英大一直挺好奇的，这些新词到底是怎么选出来的呢？

那对于新增词，韦氏是这样解释的：

"These are words that have demonstrated frequent and increasing use in a variety of sources, and are therefore likely to be encountered by a reader -- and should be in the dictionary," according to a statement on the dictionary's website.
韦氏官网上的一份声明说，这些新词在很多方面使用的越来越频繁，并且一直在成上升趋势，读者们很可能会生活中遇见这些新词，因此这些词语应该收录在词典中。

In an announcement, Merriam-Webster explained its methodology: “In some cases, terms have been observed for years and are finally being added; in others, the fast rise and broad acceptance of a term has made for a quicker journey.”
在一则声明中，韦氏词典解释了它的方法论：“在某些情况下，一些词被观察多年，最后被收录到新词中；在其他情况下，一个词，其使用率迅速增长，且被广泛接受，这个词就会更快地被收入词典中。”

而且选新词这种浩大的工作，人家怎么可能不提前准备呢？  

During last year’s presidential debates, and through this year’s inauguration, Merriam-Webster has been an active presence on Twitter, sharing words experiencing an uptick in search, or funny, relevant trivia.
在去年总统竞选辩论以及今年的就职典礼期间，韦氏词典一直在推特上很活跃，分享着那些搜索量增加的词汇或是一些相关趣事。


不过，你以为，网络新词、表情包词汇那么好进字典？关键还是韦氏这种“大咖级”的！

这也是有评判标准，好吗？开玩笑，人家才收1000多个而已！

而且还是新的旧的一起来，岂能随随便便让乱七八糟的新词都进来！

The dictionary editors use three criteria when picking words to add to the list: frequency of use, widespread use, and meaningful use -- that the word is used to mean the same thing, said Peter Sokolowski, Merriam-Webster editor at large.
韦氏词典的特约编辑彼得·索科洛夫斯基解释道：“关于如何选择新增的词语，词典的编辑们有三条原则：词的出现频率、使用的广泛程度以及其有意义的用途，也就是说这个词必须指的是同一件事情”

然而，事实上，真正的评判标准只有一个(全都是套路)！——就是要用的多！

Basically, there's only one real criterion: frequency of usage. If a word is used frequently, by many publications, and online, that's what we're looking for.
事实上，只有一个评判标准那就是使用的频率。如果一次新词频繁的出现网上、刊物上，它就是我们要找的。
